I can't wait to share this book with my daughter when she is older! I still have my autographen copy from you! I came accross this website accidentally, but am glad I found it! www.EmilyBauer.com

I think it is cool that Hillary is willing to hang out with Sara-Kate. I think Sara-Kate is extremely different and that she has a lot of things to say that I don't think Hillary really understands. I think it ends kind of sadly, though, with Sara-Kate when she has to go live with her relatives. I like the book overall. I especially enjoy the fantasy things about the elf houses, ferris wheel, and swimming pool.

We're part of a reading group and we want to tell you our favorite and least favorite parts. Our names are Logan and J.R. Junior's favorite part was when Hillary's mom walked in Sara Kate's House and S.K. was being really nice telling her to get out. Junior's least favorite part was when Hillary stole the money from her mom and the bologna. Logan's favorite part was when S.K. and Hillary had a rad party. Logan's least favorite part was when Hillary went in S.K.'s house.
We thought for a new book you could make one like Night of the goblins or Morning of the Faries. Can we part of your new book if you are going to make one as characters which are named Logan and Junior or Bruce.

We really liked this book because of all the twist and turns. Our favorite twist and turn was when Hillary's mother decided to go in the Connolly's house! It shocked us when Sara-Kate went to a orphanage. Also when Sara-Kate's mom went to a mental hospital. Why we are writing together is because it was a reading gruop. We also did our image of the elf village.
Andraya could not believe when Hillary stole the money from her mom and the bolona from the store.Courtney was shocked when Hillary disapeared.Courtney and I think you should write a sequal to Afternoon of the Elves.Like a book that connects to how Sara-Kate is doing and about her mom. Also put details about the elf village. We think the next title should be: Seeing the Elf World.
Andraya has questions for you well I was wondering why did you decide to become a writer?what eles do you like to do besides writing? How old were you when you started to write books?Courtney has some questions too. Why did you choose to dedicate this book to your daughter? What were you thinking about when you had this book in mind? What do you think you are going to write your next book about?
Andraya whats to say this was the first book she has read that you wrote and it was a great book. I am going to read your other books I really want to read The Lost Flower Children.Just by hearing the titel it sounds like it would be really good.
Courtney has to say that this book was one of my favorite books I have read. I can't wait to read other books by you. If you write a sequal to this book I am going to go out and buy it. Tonight I might go buy Afternoon of the Elves. We really think that it would be fun to be in one of your books and to meet you in person so we could get your autograph. Mabe you could put us in your next book. If you do were both 11.Courtney's small and has brown hair. Andraya's not that tall but on the other hand I am not that small.I have brown with blons strechs.
Well we gotta go.That raps it up and pretty pretty please put us in the next book.

Hi.
I think I read this book first when I was eleven (I am nineteen now) and I remember that it was very emotionally affecting to me, at the time. Lately I've been doing some writing of my own and I somehow remembered this book, along with others, as one that was very powerful to me. So I bought it at the bookstore, expecting it to be 'not that good' but I was shocked to find out it was one of the affecting books I've ever read. Somehow, it has a magical quality that I've not been able to place but I can feel it. And the way everything came together at the end was perfect.

I first experienced "Afternoon of the Elves" -- because to me you do not just read great books, you experience them -- in play form at the Omaha Children's Theatre for Young People, affectionately known as "the Rose". It took place in a small space with minimal props, leaving much to the audience's imagination, and physically breathing life into your words -- I say physically and not visually because your descriptions are so precise, down to the last tiny twig, that it unfolds before me in my mind's eye like a painting as I read. The play was so awe-inspiring that when I saw the book in a small bookstore--appropriately named "Narnia"--I pounced on it and had it finished before we reached home. I live a few blocks away from a mansion encircling a great space of the street, and when I walk around it, most often with our French poodle, Rosie, there are certain spots which seem to have sprung fully-grown, as Athena from Zeus' head, right out of your books and onto the grounds. I have all sorts of secret places around that mansion and it is a wonderful place to walk and dream. A funny thing -- I read in other reviews how some want you to make a movie out of AoE, and yesterday I started doing just that, writing a screenplay. I'm only 23, about to go to graduate school to try for my Masters in Library Science, but I'm always inspired to do this or that when it comes to books -- since AoE was already a play, and since the imagery is such that the words leap off the page and rearrange themselves into scenes, into forests, into mysterious old dark houses, I decided it would make a wonderful movie. If you have any opinions on this subject, i.e., if you have a particular way you would want me to go about this -- and understand since I AM only 23 it will probably never get produced -- although a girl who believes in elves and witches and unicorns and mystery and magic should never say "never -- feel free to email me at theannacotton@hotmail.com. Indeed, I'd be honored to hear from you. I'm used to being the odd woman out, like Sara-Kate -- branded as "different" and "weird" and "crazy" -- no longer a person, only labels of disgust and ignorance -- because I love classical music and my favorite books are "classical" ones by such authors as Aeschylus, Victor Hugo (Les Miserablse is my absolute favorite book ever as anyone who knows me can verify), even "New Age" authors like Madeleine L'Engle and "maystical" books like "The Secret Garden". In high school I was ostracized by a group of girls, all of whom were much like Alison and Jane, because I was "weird." I was shy, I liked my own music, when I'd finished my classwork -- or even if I hadn't! -- I "drew things" on my papers -- unicorns, amulets, etc. Libraries and bookstores were -- and still are -- my favorite places -- as my parents could verify, you have to physically remove me because I get lost among the stacks! ...I didn't mean to write a novel here, merely tell you I, too, am a wanderer, a watcher, a seer, a thinker, a dreamer. I love especially what you write about magic and facts; I think you are a kindred spirit; I enjoy so much getting lost in your books. If you honor me by writing back at the email above, I can tell you about my OWN elf-village! Thank you again -- thank you! thank you!

I chose to read this book because it looked like a quick easy read book. I needed a little book to read to do a project on. But was I suprised when I got about half way through it. It was an excellent book. My favorite part was when Sara Kate made Hillary leave or else. I really got into the book then.

I read this book in just one week, reluctantly putting it down only when I had to. One technique that I liked was when the author went back and forward in time, yet quickly resumed a here and now tale of the story. Further, the author made the characters come to life; so much so that when we (me and my dad) did finish the book, we felt as if we knew both Hillary and Sara-Kate.
The book does not give closure to the final disposition of Sara-Kate and her mother - at least to our satisfaction. Yes, it was made clear what their final destinations were. However, after so much time was spent in developing the mysterious character of Sara-Kate it was unpleasant not to know that she moved on to better things. She was self-reliant and would not consider the help of others. Her fears of what might result once her fellow man discovered their plight apparently came true. The initial reaction of Mrs. Lenux to help the Connolly's was welcomed. Yet, she too was satisfied in letting the "system" process the matter.
In our estimation this book is prime for a sequel.

Sara-Kate and Hillary's adventures are amazing and they always keep you thinking. You never know what will happen next. If there is "The Afternoon of the Elves 2" I will buy it in an instant! These books are wonderfully written and I hope to be as good of a writer as Janet Taylor Lisle someday! I can't wait to read another book by one of my favorite authors! Thank you.

First of all, I like all Janet Taylor Lisle's books, but I would like to review this one, because I liked that one especially. First of all, I really liked the fact that she had elves in her garden and I would really like to have some elves in my garden too. Are you with magic power? Can you make that happen? I really love your books, and I'd like to say that you are a great author!

The part that I like is when those two girls were having the little party. They only ate sandwishes with bolongna. They needed to sit on the floor. Were there any elves? Did Sara/Kate spend that much money?

Dear Janet Taylor Lisle, My favorite part of the book Afternoon of the Elves was when she stared at the ceiling. She remembered how empty the yard had seemed these last three days. She thought of the elf village, whose houses were beginning to collapse, whose leaf roofs were blown away. Their fragile construction had never been intended for winter living. She recalled Sara-Kate words: 'Elves never go inside until they have to.' The house must have seemed the most logical place to
go" Questions: 1. Is there a second book of Afternoon of the Elves? 2. What is going to happen to Sara-Kate and Hillary next?

The part that I like was when she only had $10.00 dollars .The cast was $13.05 and she was disappointed. She just wanted to leave home she did. Did she have a real elf? Why was Sara-Kate's house so ugly? Do you like stories by Dr. Suess?

Dear Janet Taylor I love the book Afternoon of the Elves. My favorite part was when they had to take Sara-Kate. That part was exciting. When I began reading I thought the book would be over. I didn't know they would say yes or no. I really love this book. Why did you end it? There was no answer but Hillary seemed to disappear. Why did you ended like that? Did Sara-Kate make up the village? What happened to Hillary? Did Sara-Kate ever came back? Your friend,

Dear Janet Lisle, My favorite part was when they where trying to have a party. It was kind of cool. They had bologna sandwiches and milk, not that much of a party. It was like a lunch, a little lunch. Why weren't there elves? Why did Sara-Kate have to go? Why did Hillary disappear at the end of the book? Is Sara-Kate an elf? Are you going to make a sequel?

Dear, Janet Taylor Lisle My favorite part is when they found the village. Then the next day they found a pool and a Ferris wheel, but still no elves. Not an elf in sight. Dear Janet My favorite part in book was when Hillary was talking about the elves I thought it was true. Then I found out it was not true. I liked when Sara-Kate was moving to a better house. She was moving away to Kansas and Hillary missed her very much. What happened to Sara-Kate? Is Hillary all right? Is Hillary upset because Sara-Kate left? Why did Sara-Kate make-up the elves? Why Sara-Kate have a Ferris wheel in her backyard?

Dear Janet, I read the book Afternoon of the Elves. I thought it was great. My favorite part of the book was, when they were talking about the the elves. When I first heard about the elves in the story I thought it was real. When they were talking about the backyard for the elves to live the Ferris wheel, and all that stuff it sounded cool. I wish I could see real elves because I never seen elves. Why does Hillary steal from her moms purse? Why does Hillary go to the store and doesn't have enough money? Why do they have elves in the story? How come Hillary jumps up when she sees her mom? Can you make another book about this but not the same?

The part I liked was when Hillary thought the elves village was real. That the elves had really built the elves houses.I think she just did that to get Hillary's attention so Hillary thought they were real. Three things I liked about this book is the creativity, the imagination, and most of all the elves. When Hillary was climding up the stairs and ready to open the door,I really thought she was going to see some elves. I thought the ending was sad and sort of cruddy. I would recommend this book to older and youger kids and maybe even adults.

Dear, Janet Taylor Lisle My favorite part was when Hillary went to the store to buy some thing. When Hillary went to pay she had just $10.00 that she stole from her mom. ThenShe went to pay and it was $13.05 and she didn't have that much money. The guy That was the cashier said "sorry you have to leave something'. The other part that I like was when Hillary dream that she went to visit Sara- Kate's house Certainly it was a dream like enough a shadow staircase. After it pass like 5 days and that dream became true. Hears some questions about the Afternoon of the elves. Why did Sara-Kate go? Why did she go? What happened to Hillary? What happened to the elf village? Did it survive?

Dear Janet Lisle Taylor, My favorite part was when Mr. Lenox asked Hillary something. But Hillary ran out the door. She cracked so her voice would be heard. So she said I think you should come in now. How many days did it take to publish your book? Do elves exist? How are the elves? Was it hard to think of all of the things you wrote? I like your book and if you write a second book I will read it.

When Hillary went to buy things for the little party, she stole money from her mother. When it was time to pay she did not have enough money to pay. I am a 6th and 7th grade special education teacher. This year my students and I have read three books for our Accelerated Reader program. Afternoon of the Elves was the last of the three, and it was definitely the most captivating. I wish you could have seen the expressions on their faces when Hillary was climbing the stairs. She went to open the door, and their eyes were wide in anticipation. I chose Afternoon of the Elves because of the truth that is portrayed in the way young adults treat each other. Students this age are quick to judge people by their appearances. The first book we read together tackled this situation as well. Only in this case, in Because of Winn-Dixie by Kate DiCamillo, an older woman is shown being judged. The children in her town call her a witch because she lives alone and doesn't get out much. Fortunately the main character grows close to this lady, and learns many valuable lessons from her.I enjoyed this book, and I highly recommend it to other teachers and their students. If you would need to contact me for any reason, my e-mail address is brainerd2003@yahoo.com

Janet Taylor Lisle you are kind and generous to provide for your readers this site for comment. I've read a book of yours selected from a raft of them on the library shelf, first in a search for the shortest but finally for an elegant title, Afternoon of the Elves which reminded me of a musical piece of similar name. As your story enveloped- for I disappear into books- the musical link deepened while I watched Hillary's somnolent social and material life begin to pale in the flash of her awakening imagination and her will to believe. Perhaps because she is both empathetic and curious she welcomes Sara-Kate's strange and needy spell upon her. The older girl can only be the child she needs to be in the elfin world that she finds or creates in her backyard. " Elves never go inside until they have to." The music punctuates in pedal tones as you ordain her the oracle for profound and lovely pronouncements about life. " She was her own single strong secret person." Fiercely independent, she is sublime in her conviction about elves yet, by the end of your tale, she falls from autonomy and becomes both playful and forlorn-human. Hillary is also left cut down and remains behind to pick up the elf village pieces , to preserve the old spell and seize her future. By then, under Sara-Kate's eye, she has become a seer, she has quickened to the wild polyphony and portent of nature, and her empathy has grown radiant. She is no longer indecisive;"There was still no answer and Hillary seemed to have disappeared." I admire your pelucid and at times poetic prose, the spell you cast and the skill, energy, identification and pleasure you put into this complex and successful story

I think the book that you wrote, The Afternoon Of The Elves was beautiful and full of imagination. Dear Janet,
I really liked your book Afternoon Of The Elves. It was very exciting . One of the spookiest parts to me was when Hillary went into Sarah-Kate's house without permition. It was very funny when Sarah-Kate was saying the football thing and then how she said "CHARGE!". How Hillary snuck the jambalaya into her big pockets of her jacket, that was a bit dangerous, but luckily she did not get caught. When Sarah-Kate came out from her house after 2 weeks and she waved her hand and the ferris wheel moved, did it mean that S.K. was really magic ?

Hi Janet,
I really loved your book because you have made me have a better imagination. I bet you that only a few people have written a book about elves. Your book was very eclectic. I always had to guess on what was coming next but that is good. Ever since I read your first book I have been wanting to read more of your vibrant books. I love them so much.

I thought your book Afternoon Of The Elves was a VERY interesting. I loved the part where they saw the elf village for the first time and how you described it so well. I bet a plethora of people that have read it thought it was magical and adventurous to them. It was almost the best book I've ever read before. And just in case you're wondering Harry Potter And The Prisoner Of Azkaban is my favorite. ;)It was definetly ecentric.

Hi,
My name is Anna Kate and I loved the book. It was very exciting to read and I just couldn't wait to see what would happen next! You are a lot like me and I know everyone says that, but it's true. My name is Anna Kate and my sister's name is Sara which makes up Sara-Kate, the character. You probably won't ever get to read this because you get millions of letters, but I love your books. I'm chose to do a report on you in school. Bill Wallace is coming this Wednesday to see us. I wish you would come. My school is Matt Wilson Elementary. If you ever get to read this my email address is Hamby_ p@bellsouth.net I hope you will write. I'm in the six grade but I'm a little short. Your website is great and colorful. My friends chose different authors and theirs was boring and gray. I have pets, there are 5 cats, 3 dogs, 2 ferrets, 1 guinea pig, 2 mice, and 2 hamsters. As you can tell we love pets! My dad loves siamese cats, but we don't have one. My grandma (his mom) had one named Max that dad had grown up with, but he died. They got a new one named Bubba, isn't that funny, crazy name. If you read this please write back!

I know you probably don't want to write a sequal as it says in one of the reviews, but i have read this book five times and couldn't put it down. The story is great but the ending, well, it just left you hanging and i would really like it if you wrote a sequal, but if you don't want to that is fine, i was very inspired to write after i read this story but i really don't like to put my ending in a book, instead i like to read the conclusion and be relieved that something has happened. Please email me with your decision, my email adress is musicluvr18@hotmail.com

I really loved the book, but it seemed as though it just kind of left off at the end and that you were going to make a sequal to it. I would really appreciate it if you did make it a series or write another follow up book. I have read your series on Angela's Aliens and Message of the Matchgirl ect. Anyway, i really love your books and you are a great author.

I have read many of your books, and I really love your work. That's why I suggested my favorite, Afternoon of the Elves, for the Mother-Daughter Book Group that my mom and I are part of.
I'm 9, in 4th grade, and I think that empathy is really an important achievement for most people, especially people my age who are learning about how to treat others. Afternoon of the ELves really touched me, and I think my mom was really impressed as well!
Everyone should read it!

I think your eccentric, yet wonderful narrative is great. I enjoyed reading your book and I was wondering if you are going to make a eclectic book the same as Afternoon of the Elves but like as a continuing version of it. The book had well written elaboration, but at the end, you suddenly leave me hanging when you said "she dissappeared". I hope you make a new series of Afternoon of the Elves but longer and with new characters like elves.

I am a teacher and I love teaching this book. The language is so lyrical that it is like reading poetry, and the children are intrigued by the situation and the possibilities of elves in the backyard. Are they real? Are they make believe? The differences of the girls are also major interest points for my students. Thank you for this wonderful book! I have given many copies as gifts. Right now I am preparing a unit so I can teach the Lost Flower Children and expect to have similar reactions from students.
Thanks again for your beautiful contributions to the world of children's literature.

I'm a sixth grade teacher
whose just read your short
story "Delia Broom and the
Frog-People of Quicksand Pond"
(found in Ribbiting Tales). We
really enjoyed your story, and
were quite taken with your use
of fantasy in what appears to
be a realistic fiction story.
That's where the debate began:
Some of us think that the
frog-people really did exist
in the story, and others argue
that Delia just made them up
to find her cat. Would you
set the record straight and
tell us what you intended? I
tried to tell the kids that
you probably left it for the
individual reader to decide,
but you know, they want a
definate answer! Care to help
me out? Thanks so much, and
keep up the great writing!

Great story! The story of friendship and acceptance of those not like us was a good theme. Hillary was a true friend. However, the things she did to keep Sara-Kate's friendship, like stealing, were not good. I think we need to know good friends to have friends disobey their parents and steal for them. That is the part of the book I found disturbing.

We really enjoyed your book. It was interesting and exciting. This was a wonderful book. It was like a family crisis. At the end of the story, did Hillary become an elf? Why didn't you reunite Hillary and Sara-Kate? If they did reunite, Sara-Kate could tell Hillary if she was an elf or not, and what was wrong with her mother.
