The Art of Keeping Cool
i really liked the book! i've read it about 6 times now! there were some sad parts like when robert's grandpa shot his father in the leg! i mean that is so cruel! well my favorite part is at the end when robert's dad comes home safe and robert, his mom,and dad all move back to their farm. i hope that you will read this book! The book was awsome and go U.S.A I like your book it was great. But i did not understand the setting of the place. I got a little confused on the setting could you tell me? mewchacha@yahoo.com I really enjoyed the Art of Keeping Cool. Some of the characters reminded me of some people I know. Like a boy in my class because they are both quiet and REALLY good drawers. I think you should really read The Art of Keeping Cool!!! I liked the book especially the part where the tanks came to town. I didn't like it when the dog got run over. I think Robert's grandpa is strict. Abel Hoffman was really worried about his painting. If I were Elliot, I wouldn't go by Abel when he's drunk and spits at me. I liked it because it was real emotional. That's why I liked the book. I liked the book because it was interesting. I liked the part when Robert and Elliot go to Abel's house together for the first time. I would recommend this book to anyone who does not have very sensitive feelings because it is very emotional. It was a really good book. I thought that Janet Taylor Lisle did a great job with The Art of Keeping Cool. It was my first book that I've read that's been written by her and I thought it was great! I really liked the times when Elliot stuck to his wits and kept visiting Able even though everyone disliked him. What shocked me in the story was when Grampa shot his own son! I couldn't believe Grandma didn't kick him out of the house! The way people treated Able reminds me of how some people are treating some Muslims today because of the September 11th attack. I think it's terrible. Anyway, Janet Taylor Lisle did a great job with this book and I hope to read more of her books in the future! Keep Janet Taylor Lisle,My last line got cut off but this is what it is supposed to say,Thank you Janet Taylor Lisle, your book touched me. Some parts of your book were really sad and moving. I know it sounds wierd but I cried in some parts, like when Robert was "scared" that the banner that his mom put up was going to change color. That made me feel like when my grandpa was in the hospital with a brain tumor.I felt like my mom would call and say that my grandpa died. She did call and he did die,I felt exactly like Robert.Thank you Janet Taylor Lisle, your bo Your book really inspired me. It reallt taught me just that when life get's tough you always just have to deal with it, Because in the little town of Satchems Head life is queer exciting and overall a great place to learn about friendsip, enemies, and taking life one step at a time. Thankyou Janet Ta Janet Taylor Lisle you have written a good, well written book.I would like to have some some of the adventures that Robert and Elliot had. Some parts leave you in suspense and some parts are just plain boring. But the book was more exciting than most books I have ever read. Some of the suspense parts are wondering if Abel Hoffman is helping Germany and why Robert's dad doesn't like Grandpa. Some of the boring parts are at night when Robert is wondering if his dad got shot down and wondering if he sent letters.I would recommend this book to older kids.I hope to read more of your books soon. Janet Taylor Lisle has amazed me. It's the first book I've read that she's written. Most of the time, I have to read a few books from authors before I get to understanding how they write. The Art Of Keeping Cool was a book that I think should win a Newbery Award. It is one of the best books I have ever read. I like to read books that have a lot of emotion. My favorite part was when Robert tried to make Elliot not go to Abel's house. Honestly, I think Robert shows big emotion, because it shows that Robert really cares about Elliot. When I first saw the title, The Art Of Keeping Cool, I thought that it would be about a drought, and the people in the book would almost starve to death. Then, there would be a huge flood. But it turned out to be something else.(Something Better) I liked this book a lot! I liked how in the book there were a lot of things you don't know and at the end they tell you. I also liked how it gave the view of World WarII from somewhere you don't hear about very often. It reminds me of a book I read that described World WarII from Germany. I thought this book was a book that children and adults would enjoy. It told me what it was like when World War 2was going on and your father was off at war fightingsomewhere. It also showed the hardships of living near a Naval Base. When Robert finds out how his father got his limp, it reminded me of when my dog died because they were both a really big shock. The only part I didn't like was when Able Hoffman got arrested and everyone was throwing things at him. It just wasn't fair, but I guess every story has parts like that. I liked the book a lot. Thank you for writing it. I liked this book because at the end of the story there was a happy ending because Robert's dad came home and he was safe and Robert and his family moved back to the farm. When Abel Hoffman lived in the woods when Robert and Elliot came to visit you could tell he made the best of what he had by growing a vegetable garden and building a shed to protect his paintings. When Abel got arrested because people thought he did something bad when he didn't, it remimded me of when I watched a movie called "October Sky" because they got arrested for doing something they didn't do. I liked the book. Many parts of the book were exciting. I always had fun reading it. Everything that happened to Robert was exciting. Finding out about Abel Hoffman, learning about Elliot, trying to cope with Grandpa, his mother not speaking about his father, and everything else going on. This book reminds me of another book called The Winter of Red Snow. There is a war going on in that book too. Janet Tylor Lisle, you've made a great book.I just loved when Robert's family came together at the end. But,I wouldn't recommend this book to to a second grader who loves to read because it's so emotional.Otherwise anybody could read it and enjoy it. I really liked your book.I thought the part where Elliot draws grampa shooting Robert'sdad in the leg was really well written.I liked the details. The details made it kind of scary.I also liked how you show what Elliot and Robert are like when they are older. When they go through the hole in the fence it reminds me of going through this big bunch of tall pine trees where no one knows where I am.Good luck on your next book!!! "The Art of Keeping Cool" was an exciting, realistic, well written book. The word choice helped me to understand the book better. The characters, Robert and Elliot, are like all other people. Elliot reminds me of my cousin who is quiet yet a nice person. Robert reminds me of my friend who is supportive. My favorite part of the book is the ending, which all works out. I would definitely recommend the book to others. I am reading your book and it is awsome. And i love it Ms. Lisle's done it again! Another story touching on grownup themes--this time secrecy and prejudice--told in a way that helps innoculate young readers against them. "The Art of Keeping Cool" focuses on an aspect of World War II that is usually paid scant attention, German submarines torpedoing ships off the coast of New England. In the hands of master storyteller Lisle, we see how easy it is for hate and paranoia to develop, the tragic losses they cause, and the art of keeping cool that enables us to carry on despite them. What a story! As a family, we enjoy reading books together. This time, I did the reading, and there were times I was so overcome by emotion, I had to hand the book off to my son or husband. The author captures the essence of boyhood, the risks and joys of friendship, and illustrates the growth of a pre-teen conscience, while reminding us of the duty within us all to quell prejudice and embrace others as we would our family.

All it did was make me hurt more about the people who have fought in war; it reminded me of them. I just finished reading this book,
almost five minutes ago, and loved it
so much I had to look up the author
and find more books to read. This
story is so in-depth and meaningful,
and the way Elliot's quietness, and the
secret about Robert's father work their
way in is absolutely perfect. I promised
myself that I would read it again, as
soon as I finished it, not later when I'm
done with another book, and I plan to
do that as soon as I finish some
homework tonight. I guess what I
really loved about this book is the
deep history that it presented. I am
very interested in U.S. history myself.
Also, I have dreamed of having the
opportunity to "shut out the world" in
a way where I am still there, but no
one ever pesters me, or tries to "help"
me, as Elliot seemed to do. I also loved
the realistic way that Elliot and Robert
got along, not perfectly. like if they
bonded instantly or didn't bond
instantly, but never got into
arguments. Instead there were times
when the two were throroughly angry
with each other, but resolved their
conflicts without having sappy heart-
to-hearts. This book was amazing, in
my opinion, and I am sure to read
more by Janet Taylor Lisle. I am an
instantaneous fan!!

Set in February of 1942, just months after the bombing of Pearl Harbor, The Art of Keeping Cool is the story of friendship, love, and trust between two boys, (Robert and Elliot) and a well-known German artist (Abel Hoffman). The author, Janet Taylor Lisle, writes first-hand about a boy, whose father is in the war, and the boy's cousin (Elliot). Robert says that Elliot can draw better then anyone he knows, but Elliot insists to keep his talent a secret, and he won't say why. Abel Hoffman becomes a friend and teacher to Elliot, but his being a German forces Elliot to keep their friendship and art lessons a secret. But when Abel is arrested their friendship takes a new turn.

The Art of Keeping Cool is a mindblowing story of realistic discrimination and bias and the telling of very common and real events. It's so well written, it moves you and opens your eyes to a proud and ignorant discriminative attitude that appears every day and in every war. You cant read this book without learning the lesson from it and shedding tears over the heartwrenching passion and hate portrayed in the book.

This book is full of secrets
that you just want the author
to answer. A thirteen year
ole boy named Robert is
from Sachem's Head
Rhode Island. He and his
mom move in with his
grandpa, grandma, and his
artistick cousin Elliot. Elliot
is also thirteen and knows
a famous German artist
[Abel Hoffman] and doesn't
tell any one but Robert
because this was in the
middle of world war 2 and
he doesn't want Abel to be
arrested. Robert's father
doesn't know that they are
at grandpa and grandma's
house instead of the farm.
Later during the book the
book a kind of bad thing
happens between grandpa
and dad. I would give this
book * * * stars.

This book has many
secrets that were very well
woven. Robert has a strong
will for letting things that are
terrible go by and not getting
depressed. This book
includes many unique
personalities and aspects
of people's lives. Do NOT
read this book if you are
easily offended because
some things are pretty
disturbing. The art of
keeping cool is a book that
is good for personal
entertainment or for literacy
groups. I recommend this
book for fourth grade and
up. In the time world war
two took place life was hard
for people all around the
world. On both coasts of
America peoople were
afraid of invasion. Gas was
a precious material and the
only way to get vegetables
was to grow them in your
garden. During the night
you had to turn out the lights
or use blackout curtains,
which are curtains that are
black and not transparent.
I gave this four stars
because it has many
secrets that all tie together
at the end.

I'm giving the Art of
Keeping Cool four stars. I
liked it a lot. This book has
a lot of feeling and secrets
for the characters. I thought
it was interresting how Elliot
behaved around Abel
Hoffmon . Though Elliot is
very unique kid himself.
He still ignores the bad and
strange things Abel did.
I also sort of wondered
how Grandpa could do
such a thing to his own son.
No wonder Robert's father
got on the first train out of
there. I liked the book a lot
except the ending was sort
of dull. It was not as
catching as the rest.

Janet, I like the book a lot. It was kinda slow in the begining but got better as I kept reading. Like some people I couldn't tell if there was just one main event or a couple.

I LOVED your book! I was surprised to learn that the Grampa shot Robert's dad.I liked the part where Robert saw his dad again. But I think what you should have done was to have Robert and Elliot switch after every chapter so we would know what Elliot feels like. I would recommend this to anybody.

Your book was excellent!! It was very suspensful. It taught good family values. Like how Robert's family stuck together when they were having a hard time. I also think it teaches you to trust people even if they are different. I think you should write more mystery books.

I thought the book was pretty good. It was interesting and very exciting. The only problem I had was that it needed a little more action and then it would be better.

I read this book over the summer, for my reading list, and I coudn't put it down. I really enjoyed this book. It was fun to try to solve the mystery while reading the book, like Robert. I liked the way the characters responded. I also liked the suprise ending. It really teaches you self-respect for foreign, admist turmoil, which is still a good skill today. I suggest this book, and its a real page-turner!

I think the book had a solid foundation as the story goes. I think the characters in the story were very lively and real. If I didn't know I would think it would be real. I liked that there was a conflict with the Grandfather and Robert, and Elillot. I would read it again. I think it needs a little bit more action in it though. As far as fast pace goes. You picked a great topic that everyone should have a chance to read it. I am interested in WW2 books and it did have some WW2 in it. I am glad that I read that.

The Art of keeping cool is a great book! I think the name fits perfectly. I loved the way the characters seemed so real. They all had some flaws and differences. I think it is horrible the way some of the people in Sachem's Head discriminated against Able. It was not one person we were at war with but Adolf Hitler's ruling.

The part I liked the most was the ending when Robert's family got together again. The part I did not like was when Robert's dad got shot down. I felt sad like Robert. This brought tears to my eyes.
The title and the book didn't seem to fit together. I would change the title to "A Tale of War".

Overall this book pertained to an interesting subject but I believe it dulled when the introduction and facts about Robert's father dragged on and on. Chapter 9 is where I felt the interest of the book picked up. I think Abel's expressive art and his life in the old country where he lived was the most defined part of the book. I disliked the title. I understood how it came to be but I think she could've chose a bolder title. After this selection of reading I decided if you wanted to read this book you probably would understand history in a different way. I do.

I liked the book because it showed emotion. It shows emotion because it tells how Robert feels when he finds out Grandpa shot his dad in the leg, and how he feels about Grandpa. Another reason I like the book is it makes you wonder a lot. You wonder if Robert's Dad died. You wonder what happened to Robert's dad's leg, and you wonder what Grandpa will do next. I'd recommend this book to someone who likes historical fiction. It's one of my favorite books.

I liked the book but I don't think they should beat up Abel Hoffman just because he is German. He hasn't done anything wrong, he's just a painter. He's not the bad guy, he just lives there. I would recommend this book for everyone because I love it and I believe other people will love it too.

I think anyone could read this book if they wanted to. I think Abel should not get beat up just because he is in a country that his country is having a war against. Abel is lucky because he has Elliot to do things for him. Abel is an interesting character.

Another great one!! "The Art of Keeping Cool" kept me in suspense all of the time wondering what is going to happen next. I like the fact that it is about something that we really don't care to remember. The detail you gave was great! In some parts I could actually see what things looked like. Sometimes when I read the story I felt like I was Robert or Elliot. I wish you luck on your next book.

I really liked this book because it was so easy to get into. I liked that Robert was always watching out for Elliot when Abel was in trouble. I especially liked the end where they got older and then it told about it and then it came back to normal time.
Chris F

I think "The Art of Keeping Cool" is overall a good book. I didn't like the beginning though, because it was about World War 2 and that is a hard subject for me to get into. But the book gradually got better after Abel Hoffman told Robert and Elliot about his hardships in Germany. This book makes you feel many emotions like sadness, excitement, happiness, and even wondering what's going to happen next. Many parts of this book remind me of September 11th. I would recommend this book to anyone that likes world War 2 information and is ready to feel many emotions.

Elliot was a quiet kid, I knew that from the start. What I didn't know, but wanted to, was why my dad left his parents' house so quick, and why Elliot was so paranoid when Abel Hoffman came near. Of course, by and by, everything came into place in that little Rhode Island town of Sachem's Head.
